Review: Soraya – A Persian Culinary Tapestry Unveiled in Abu Dhabi

In the bustling landscape of Abu Dhabi’s culinary scene, where new ventures consistently emerge and cherished establishments refine their craft, Soraya has swiftly carved a distinctive niche. As a Persian-inspired restaurant, it truly excels in blending tradition with innovative flair, offering a rich and vibrant flavour profile that promises a unique culinary experience. It was with a sense of keen anticipation that I recently revisited this true gem, for a celebratory lunch marking their first anniversary.

Stepping into Soraya, the ambience immediately exudes a sophisticated warmth, a feeling of being embraced by an elegant yet inviting space, nestled within what feels like an exquisite greenhouse surrounding. It provides the perfect backdrop for a leisurely meal, where time seems to slow, allowing for true appreciation of the moment. The service was both attentive and thoroughly knowledgeable, expertly guiding us through the anniversary specials and indeed, the restaurant’s much-cherished standard menu, known for its meticulously crafted dishes designed for communal feasting.

Adding a delightful dimension to the week’s festivities was a thoughtfully curated coffee pop-up by local brand, KZNZ. For a special seven-day period, Soraya’s drinks station transformed into a full-service coffee bar, presenting a charming array of espresso classics, modern lattes, and delightful UAE-rooted favourites. KZNZ, celebrated for its meticulous approach to coffee-making, integrated seamlessly into Soraya’s ethos, gracefully bringing two communities together over something so wonderfully simple.

Our culinary journey commenced with a selection of starters that truly showcased Soraya’s mastery of flavour. The Nan-e-goost, a spiced sourdough flatbread, arrived warm and fragrant, its earthy notes beautifully complemented by a generous dollop of spiced whipped feta, a creamy, tangy concoction that melted delightfully on the tongue. This was swiftly followed by the Parmesan Sibzamini, crispy fried potatoes elevated by the luxurious aroma of truffle. Each bite offered a satisfying crunch and an utterly addictive richness, a testament to thoughtful preparation.

For the main course, we delved into one of the highly anticipated anniversary collaborations: an exquisite Saffron Risotto with Short Ribs. This brilliant creation was courtesy of the renowned UAE Twin Chefs, Abdulrahman and Maitha of Savor and Napoli. This talented duo, celebrated for their bold flavour combinations blending Italian and Emirati cooking, delivered a true testament to culinary synergy. The risotto was cooked to absolute perfection, creamy and thoroughly infused with saffron’s delicate notes. Crowned with tender, slow-cooked short ribs that effortlessly pulled apart, it proved a comforting yet sophisticated dish, perfectly marrying rich flavours with expert execution.

Beyond the UAE Twin Chefs, Soraya’s birthday week also featured Chef Khaled of Burnt Butter, making a welcome return after a sold-out guest dinner earlier in the year. Chef Khaled is widely celebrated for his soulful approach to Emirati cuisine, adeptly fusing fire, memory, and modern technique. While I did not have the opportunity to sample his specific collaboration, its inclusion certainly underscored the depth and variety of the anniversary celebrations.

To quench our thirst, the drink selections were equally impressive. The Passion Fruit Virgin Colada was a vibrant tropical escape in a glass, refreshingly sweet, whilst the Mint and Lime Mojito offered a classic, invigorating zest that perfectly cut through the richness of the meal. Both, I must say, were expertly mixed, striking just the right balance of flavours.

Our lunch concluded on a sweet, truly memorable note with the Golden Burnt Saffron Cheesecake. This dessert was nothing short of a revelation, a delicate balance of creamy texture with the subtle, aromatic whisper of saffron, crowned by a perfectly burnt top that added a delightful caramelised hint. It was a sophisticated and innovative twist on a classic, leaving a lasting impression of sheer culinary artistry.

Dining at Soraya for their first anniversary lunch was an experience that truly transcended a mere meal. It was, rather, a celebration of culinary passion and innovation. The seamless integration of their standard menu with exciting collaborations created a dynamic and utterly unforgettable feast. Soraya continues to impress with its unwavering commitment to quality ingredients, impeccable service, and a truly inviting atmosphere. It stands as a shining testament to fine dining in Abu Dhabi, and I eagerly anticipate what their next exciting chapter will bring.
