Housed within the historic former Ministry of Interior building along the Corniche, it seamlessly blends Brutalist architecture with 1970s glamour and a vibrant art collection. We sit down with Massimiliano Binda, the Managing Director, to discuss his vision for this remarkable property and how it continues to evolve as a hub for creativity, business, and leisure in the region.

What initially drew you to The Ned Doha project, and what is your guiding vision for this remarkable property in the heart of Qatar?
What drew me most to The Ned Doha was the rare opportunity to craft something distinctive in a market that is evolving at a remarkable pace. The Ned’s concept, a hotel and members’ club that fuses history, creativity, and lifestyle, is a unique proposition in the region. From the outset, my vision has been clear: to establish a destination that resonates deeply with locals, expatriates, and international travellers alike. This is not merely a place to stay; it is a cultural and social landmark, one that celebrates hospitality in its purest sense, from intuitive, heartfelt service to immersive guest experiences. Gastronomy plays a central role. Through a diverse culinary offering that reflects both global inspiration and local flavours, we aim to create moments that are not just memorable, but meaningful.

The choice of the former Ministry of Interior building is quite inspired. How did this historic backdrop influence the hotel’s design ethos and distinctive 1970s aesthetic?
The building’s Brutalist architecture gave us a bold foundation, honest, expressive, and full of character. Rather than mask its original identity, we embraced it. We preserved the integrity of the structure while layering in The Ned’s signature aesthetic through rich textures, retro furnishings, and touches of Art Deco glamour. David Chipperfield Architects, in collaboration with Soho House Design, have reinterpreted the building’s legacy with remarkable sensitivity. The result is not nostalgic; it is evocative, celebrating an era defined by boldness and creativity, while paying homage to a significant piece of Qatar’s architectural heritage.
As an ‘art hotel’ featuring more than a hundred works from regional and international artists, how does this collection shape the guest experience and define The Ned Doha’s identity?
Art is not an accessory here, it is at the very heart of The Ned Doha experience. The collection, comprising over 350 works by more than 90 artists, reflects the depth and diversity of the region’s contemporary art scene. Many pieces were specially commissioned, spanning mediums from sculpture and textile to photography and installation. What makes the collection especially powerful is its focus on artists from Qatar and the broader GCC. The works explore themes like identity, memory, globalisation, and ecology, inviting guests to engage emotionally and intellectually. It transforms the hotel into a living gallery, where every corridor and corner offers a moment of discovery.

The Ned’s Club is a cornerstone of the experience. Can you share how it sets itself apart and what it offers to its discerning members?
The Ned’s Club is exclusive, but not exclusionary. It is built on shared values, an appreciation for culture, creativity, and meaningful connection. Members gain access to private spaces, wellness facilities, curated dining, and a dynamic calendar of events. But more importantly, they become part of a vibrant community. From intimate talks with artists to live music performances and brand collaborations, the club fosters an atmosphere where ideas and inspiration flow freely. It is where diplomats might share a drink with designers, and where the spirit of Doha’s cosmopolitan energy comes alive.

The Ned Doha combines art, design, cuisine, membership, and history. How do these elements come together to create a truly distinctive experience?
It is all about intentional layering. Each element, the architecture, the culinary journey, the curated art, the exclusivity of the club, is designed to stand alone, yet interweave seamlessly. A guest might begin their day with breakfast in Millie’s Lounge, unwind in the spa or club, meander through art-filled corridors, and dine at Cecconi’s or Kaia. The experience feels immersive yet cohesive, elegant yet grounded. What sets The Ned Doha apart is how harmoniously these facets converge to create something elevated, soulful, and deeply rooted in its Qatari context.
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and plans for The Ned Doha as it continues to evolve?
The journey is only just beginning. Our vision is to reinforce The Ned Doha as a cultural hub, a space where creativity, business, leisure, and community intersect. Situated along the Corniche, we are uniquely positioned to serve as both a landmark and a gathering place. Moving forward, we will continue expanding our lifestyle and wellness offerings, enhancing the food and beverage concepts, and creating curated moments that reflect our surroundings.
