Toyota Confirms Launch for GR Supra Supercar

Toyota’s long-awaited entry into the Repco Supercars Championship is finally taking shape, with the legendary GR Supra set to be officially unveiled at a launch event in Sydney.

Toyota’s long-awaited entry into the Repco Supercars Championship is finally taking shape, with the legendary GR Supra set to be officially unveiled at a launch event in Sydney on September 1. The reveal marks a milestone for the Japanese giant as it prepares to join the grid for the 2026 season.

A New Contender Arrives

The anticipation surrounding Toyota’s Supercars debut has reached fever pitch. The GR Supra, already a symbol of performance and legacy, is now positioned to take on Australia’s racing elite, including the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. Supercars CEO James Warburton described Toyota’s arrival as “absolutely huge,” noting, “Toyota joining the grid with the legendary GR Supra is a complete game-changer.” He added that the move would energize the sport, bringing in a fresh wave of excitement from passionate fans across the country. The Sydney launch event, timed to build hype ahead of the iconic Bathurst 1000, is set to be a celebration of motorsport prowess and Toyota’s bold future on the track.

Under Wraps to On Track

This journey began in September 2024, when Toyota revealed a clay model of the Supra at Bathurst. While the prototype hadn’t undergone full aerodynamic testing like its Mustang and Camaro counterparts, it sparked curiosity about the car’s potential. Since then, the development program has accelerated significantly. Engine testing and design refinements have taken place quietly, with two separate V8 powertrains in development, one by Supercars’ official engine shop in Queensland, and the other by UK-based Swindon Powertrains under Walkinshaw Andretti United’s (WAU) supervision. WAU will field two Supras, driven by incumbent stars Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood, while Brad Jones Racing (BJR) will add four more cars to the 2026 grid.

A Legacy Recharged

Toyota’s motorsport pedigree is well established. Through its GAZOO Racing Australia program, the manufacturer has earned accolades in grassroots motorsport, off-road rallying, and circuit racing. Now, with the GR Supra Supercar, Toyota is ready to step onto the biggest stage in Australian motorsport. Sean Hanley, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations at Toyota Australia, described the launch as “a truly historic milestone,” saying, GR Supra is a car synonymous with performance, passion and power, and as a race car, it makes an electrifying statement.” Hanley emphasized the significance of the moment, noting that the Supra’s debut would excite fans of Toyota, GAZOO Racing, and Supercars alike.

The Countdown Begins

The first official Supra prototype is set to begin testing by late August, marking a critical step in the car’s road to competition. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see it in motion, with the launch event on September 1 providing a close-up look at this high-performance machine. The unveiling in Sydney will also serve as the kick-off to Bathurst 1000 festivities, further cementing Toyota’s entry as a headline moment in the racing calendar. The 2026 season promises fierce rivalries, and with the Supra on the grid, the battle for Supercars supremacy just got even more thrilling.
