Samah Ahmad Talks Layering Luxury

How to Combine Texture, Tone, and Bespoke Details for an Elegant Home

In today’s world, luxury is no longer about extravagance. It’s about meaning. At Bond Habitat, a premier interior design and renovation studio based in the heart of Dubai, this belief shapes every project. Known for delivering high-quality, customised fit-out solutions, Bond Habitat transforms apartments, kitchens, and bathrooms into refined spaces that elevate everyday living.

Samah Ahmad, Lead Designer at Bond Habitat, has a clear perspective on what defines modern luxury. It’s deeply personal, intentionally curated, and built through thoughtful layering.

“The most elegant interiors are those that reflect your individuality through a thoughtful mix of materials, tones, and bespoke details that mean something special to you. By layering these elements in a considered way, your home becomes more than just visually striking – it tells a story that’s uniquely yours.”

Luxury

What Is Layered Luxury?

The term layered luxury describes a sophisticated yet subtle approach to interior design. It’s less about ornate finishes and more about creating depth, warmth, and personality through contrast and composition.

“It’s not about being overly ornate, rather it’s about designing a space that feels curated, welcoming, and unique. Every layer, whether it’s a finish, tone, or custom feature, adds a quiet sense of elegance that feels lived-in and refined.”

Intentional layering brings harmony. Mixing eras, tones, and materials allows each piece to shine while contributing to a cohesive whole.

“Explore ways to mix old with new, soft with structured, light with dark. That contrast is where the character lives. Each piece should feel like it belongs, but still hold its own.”

The Role of Texture

Among all design tools, texture is arguably the most emotionally resonant. It doesn’t just add visual interest, it creates atmosphere.

“Texture is one of the most powerful tools in luxury interior design, as it adds tangible depth in a way that colour alone can’t. Whether it’s a smooth surface, a tactile fabric, or a raw finish, different textures add variety and spark people’s interest, ensuring that your interiors stand out.”

Soft textures invite warmth and comfort.

“Soft fabrics like velvet or cashmere inject comfort and the more you add, the more homely your space will feel. Whereas, sleek, hard materials like glass and metal add an air of structure and formality. And when you introduce natural elements like wood, linen, or stone, the space takes on an organic, grounded quality that often feels rustic and nostalgic.”

Crucially, the layering of textures must feel balanced.

“Don’t be afraid to combine different textures, in fact this blend is integral to the art of layering. Just remember, that balance is key. Pair soft with structured, matte with a hint of sheen, always looking for contrast that feels natural. It’s not about matching, but about creating harmony between differences. I think of it like building a captivating rhythm that flows through your space, making it interesting, effortless and cohesive.”

Tone-on-Tone Colour Palettes

Tone-on-tone colour palettes are a subtle way to create depth without overwhelming the eye. They offer sophistication through restraint.

“One of my favourite layering strategies is to use tone-on-tone colour palettes for super subtle, yet effective results. Tone-on-tone palettes incorporate varying shades of a single colour to deliver impact without being overwhelming and instil a sense of calm into the surroundings.”

It’s all about staying within the same family of hues while introducing variety through contrast in depth and texture.

“Try combining lighter and darker tones of the same hue; think dove grey with charcoal, or warm taupe with deep mocha. Then layer in different textures within that palette, such as velvet, silk, stone, or marble. Because they’re all within the same colour family, they work in harmony while still offering contrast. The result is beautifully nuanced, polished and personal.”

Blending in Bespoke Accents

Bespoke pieces bring a soul to the space, a mark of intentionality and craftsmanship.

“Bespoke furniture and accessories are where the magic really happens; they’re what take a space from beautiful to unique and unforgettable. Custom pieces allow you to tailor everything, including proportions, materials, finishes to suit your space and lifestyle perfectly.”

Custom doesn’t have to mean oversized or extravagant.

“You don’t have to go big with everything. Smaller bespoke touches, like ceramics, cushions, or made-to-measure rugs, can add just as much personality and charm. The beauty of bespoke is that nothing is generic, and this level of considered detail will transform your interior into something immersive and memorable.”

While custom elements often require more investment, they offer value beyond trend, they become lasting anchors in a home’s story.

“Yes, going bespoke requires investment. But when the craftsmanship and intention are done right, these pieces hold their value visually and emotionally.”

The True Nature of Luxury

Layering is not just a technique, it’s a mindset. It respects evolution over time, embracing change and growth.

“I believe that great design is never rushed. The most beautiful spaces grow with time and evolve, just like the people living in them. Layering is part of that evolution and the process is continuous. It allows you to tell your story and express your identity as you create a home that feels authentic: that is the epitome of luxury to me.”
