Qatar Foundation Opens the Middle East’s First M. F. Husain Museum in Doha

The evening traced Husain’s artistic evolution and culminated in the unveiling of his original sketch conceptualising the museum, now brought to life by architect Martand Khosla.

The museum’s grand inauguration was led by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, at an exclusive ceremony attended by leading art experts, collectors, and cultural figures from around the world.

Doha has unveiled a striking new cultural landmark with the opening of Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum, the first institution in the region dedicated entirely to the legacy of legendary modern artist Maqbool Fida Husain. Established by Qatar Foundation in the heart of Education City, the museum offers an immersive, world-class encounter with the artist’s extraordinary creative universe.

In her remarks, Her Highness described Husain as “a true master whose artistic works transcend borders and connect cultures, histories, and identities,” noting that the museum realises his long-held aspiration to create a space where his ideas, heritage, and groundbreaking aesthetic could be preserved and celebrated.

Inside, visitors are invited to explore more than 150 original artworks and personal objects, many being publicly exhibited for the first time. Paintings, films, tapestries, photographs, and handwritten materials illuminate Husain’s engagement with the cultural histories of the Arab region and South Asia, as well as the Islamic artistic traditions that informed his distinctive visual language.

Among the centrepieces are 35 monumental works inspired by Arab civilisation, along with Seeroo fi al ardh, Husain’s final and most ambitious masterpiece. Celebrating humanity’s progress, this immersive installation, initially unveiled by Qatar Foundation in 2019, now forms one of the museum’s signature galleries and was the setting for the inauguration’s elegant gala dinner.

Beyond its exhibition spaces, Lawh Wa Qalam features a refined café, a curated gift shop, a library and Creativity Hub for research and artistic exploration, and an auditorium for cultural events and lectures. The museum aligns with Qatar Foundation’s commitment to championing art as a catalyst for curiosity, dialogue, and cross-cultural understanding.

Open throughout the year, the museum welcomes visitors to experience Husain’s world through guided tours in Arabic and English, with audio tours to be introduced in 2026.
