Prada S/S 2027 arrives at Milan Fashion Week with many of the codes we have come to expect from Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons: awkward proportions, traditionally feminine pieces given a harder edge, unexpected layering and clothes that sit somewhere between beautiful and deliberately uncomfortable.
The skirt is the clear protagonist. Dramatic slits, sculptural shapes, pleating and heavy embellishment turn it into something far more commanding, while simple shirts, sweater vests and utilitarian outerwear provide contrast.
It is when these opposites meet that Prada is at its best.
Bra tops are worn with extravagant skirts. Floral references sit alongside distressed leather. Pretty details are deliberately disrupted by tougher silhouettes. The collection understands that femininity does not have to mean softness.
But there is an unavoidable sense of familiarity.
Prada has spent years perfecting this tension between the ordinary and the strange, the feminine and the severe. Spring/Summer 2027 does it beautifully, but rarely feels like it is breaking entirely new ground.
Some of the embellishment also threatens to overwhelm the clothes. When everything is designed to provoke attention, the individual ideas can begin competing with one another.
Still, Prada remains compelling because it does not simply produce clothes. It produces questions about how those clothes should be worn.
This collection may not radically redefine the Prada vocabulary, but it proves that the vocabulary is still remarkably effective.
Beautiful? Certainly. Challenging? Sometimes. Completely new? Not quite.
