A landmark project over a decade in the making, the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi is set to open its doors in December 2025, unveiling a tribute to the UAE’s rich cultural tapestry and visionary founding father.
Strategically located on Saadiyat Island, Zayed National Museum will be the centrepiece of Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District, home to renowned institutions such as Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, and the forthcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. This cultural cluster positions the city as a global hub for heritage, dialogue, and creativity.
Designed to Soar: Zayed National Museum’s Architecture is Inspired by the Falcon
Conceived by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the museum’s iconic structure mirrors the wing feathers of a falcon in flight, a tribute to one of the UAE’s most cherished traditions. The five soaring steel towers double as thermal chimneys, naturally cooling the building while offering an architectural spectacle visible across the city’s skyline.
The design is not only a nod to tradition but also integrates sustainability, cultural symbolism, and innovative engineering, making it one of the most important architectural landmarks in the Middle East.
A Journey Through 300,000 Years of History
Spanning the Palaeolithic period to the present day, the museum’s six permanent galleries and temporary exhibition spaces will guide visitors through 300,000 years of Emirati heritage. These exhibits chronicle everything from ancient settlements and trade to Islamic arts, maritime exploration, and the rise of a modern nation.
Must-see artefacts on display will include the Abu Dhabi Pearl, the world’s oldest natural pearl, dating back 8,000 years, as well as the Blue Qur’an, a stunning 9th-century manuscript celebrated for its gold-on-indigo calligraphy. The Magan Boats, an 18-metre Bronze Age vessel reconstructed through collaborative research and even tested at sea, will also be a highlight.

Honouring Sheikh Zayed’s Vision
Named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s revered Founding Father, the museum is deeply rooted in his belief in education, unity, and cultural understanding. A dedicated gallery titled Our Beginning will offer an intimate look at Sheikh Zayed’s life, values, and enduring influence on the nation’s identity.
“This museum is more than a place of preservation, it is a promise to future generations,” said His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi. “A space where our story is told not just through objects, but through emotion, memory, and vision.”
A Global Centre for Cultural Research and Innovation
Beyond its role as a museum, the Zayed National Museum aims to become a world-class research institution. Its dedicated Research Fund supports initiatives exploring the UAE’s architectural heritage, the digital preservation of ancient petroglyphs, and the broader history of the Gulf.
International partnerships, including past collaborations with the British Museum, underline its global reach and commitment to scholarly excellence.

When Is Zayed National Museum Opening?
While an exact date has not been confirmed, speculation suggests that 2nd December 2025, the UAE’s National Day, would be a symbolic and fitting moment for a grand opening.
Visitors can look forward to immersive educational experiences, interactive exhibits, a state-of-the-art research library, and lush gardens reflecting the human and ecological history of the UAE.
