Sevil Dolmacı Is Redefining the Role of the Contemporary Gallery

Art beyond borders

In a crisp, light-filled gallery space situated within Dubai Design District, Sevil Dolmacı is seated beneath a bold piece of pop-inflected contemporary art, one of many curated under her latest exhibition, Pop of Time. The scene is telling: emblematic of both her curatorial philosophy and her enduring ambition to create conversations that transcend place, period, and expectation.

From Istanbul to Dubai, from art historian to gallery founder, Dolmacı has traced a path as rigorous as it is visionary, bridging academic precision with commercial acumen, and elevating regional voices onto global platforms.

A Curatorial Journey Rooted in Academia

Dolmacı’s career began not behind the white walls of a gallery, but within the quiet stacks of academia. “My education in art history not only provided me with deep knowledge of different periods and movements,” she reflects, “but also trained me to interpret artworks within their sociocultural contexts.”

That academic foundation was further refined during formative stints at the Royal Academy of Arts, Tate Modern, and the Saatchi Gallery in London. “At those institutions, I observed how the global art market operates,” she explains. “I learned how the language of display can alter the perceived value of a work, and how crucial dialogue with the audience truly is.”

Those early experiences are not mere footnotes in her biography, they are, in many ways, the invisible scaffolding that supports her curatorial ethos today. “I strive to bring together international standards and local dynamics in every exhibition,” Dolmacı says. “The vision I gained at those institutions is a core perspective I now integrate into every project at my gallery.”

From Istanbul to Dubai: A Gallery with a Global Pulse

Having spent years in academia and consultancy, Dolmacı transitioned into gallery ownership out of both necessity and vision. “Art is not only about aesthetics, but also a strategic investment and a field of cultural influence,” she says. Her decision to open her first gallery in Istanbul was born of a gap she perceived in the market: “Collectors in Turkey were not being represented at international standards, and young artists were struggling to access the platforms they deserved.”

Dubai, with its intersection of finance, architecture, and cosmopolitan ambition, was a natural next step. “We saw an opportunity to build a regional hub where art could resonate within a truly global ecosystem.”

Since the gallery’s expansion in 2023, Sevil Dolmacı Gallery has become one of the region’s most dynamic spaces, fusing local identity with international sensibility.

Balancing Concept and Commerce

Dolmacı’s career has not been confined to traditional gallery walls. From overseeing art for luxury properties like the St. Regis Istanbul to curating the expansive Kemer Country Sculpture Park, her projects reflect a masterful balancing act between artistic integrity and commercial pragmatism.

“In large-scale projects, the most critical issue is establishing a model that preserves conceptual depth while aligning with commercial realities,” she explains. That balance is never struck arbitrarily. “I analyse the spirit, history, and audience of each space before inviting artists to respond to it.”

The results? Public-facing art that is as intellectually engaging as it is economically sound. “The final result should be a conceptually strong, enduring art experience that enhances both the economic and cultural value of the site,” Dolmacı asserts.

Pop of Time: Past Meets Present

Her latest exhibition, Pop of Time, captures the pulse of now. “I wanted to interpret today’s rapidly changing visual culture and its impact on our perception of memory, time, and aesthetics,” she says. Featuring artists from Turkey, the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, the show interrogates the superficiality and substance of pop culture.

“Is ‘pop’ merely a surface, or is it a deep narrative that reflects the spirit of an era?” she asks. The works range from playful and nostalgic to bold and conceptual, inviting viewers to reconsider their relationship with both the past and the hyper-mediated present.

It is also, in many ways, a metaphor for Dolmacı’s wider mission: to explore how the global and the local not only coexist, but mutually enrich one another.

Building an Inclusive, Future-Focused Platform

What distinguishes Dolmacı’s gallery isn’t just the art it presents, it’s the values that underpin it. “Our most fundamental value is to provide intellectual depth and international-level representation for our artists,” she says.

Whether exhibiting an established name or discovering an emerging talent, the selection process is meticulous. “We look for a strong artistic language, conceptual depth, and a commitment to continuous evolution,” she explains. “We need to believe in the potential for a long-term collaboration.”

That investment in emerging voices is particularly visible in Dubai, where programming is tailored to reflect the city’s unique, multicultural texture. “We exhibit strong regional narratives while bringing in international names to broaden the conversation,” Dolmacı says.

This is not mere tokenism, it’s a blueprint for sustainable global engagement. “We want to build a platform that brings together artists from different geographies and blends the dynamism of the local with a global vision.”

Shaping the Middle East’s Art Ecosystem

With decades of experience behind her, Dolmacı has become one of the region’s leading cultural voices. Her assessment of the Middle Eastern art scene is both hopeful and grounded.

“There’s a strong energy here,” she says. “Young artists are conceptually bold and eager to fuse local culture with global language. But we still need stronger institutional collections, more independent critical platforms, and deeper investment in art writing.”

As for Dubai, its transformation into a global art hub is, in her view, just beginning. “Its geographic position uniquely connects collectors from Asia, Europe, and Africa. It’s no longer just a transit point, it’s a base for collectors, a showcase for artists, and a conceptual playground for curators.”

One of the defining characteristics of collectors in the Middle East, Dolmacı notes, is their boldness. “They make decisions quickly and show great openness to innovation. This courage is one of the key driving forces behind the rise of contemporary art in the region.”

Looking Beyond Borders

The future for Sevil Dolmacı Gallery looks both bright and expansive. Having recently hosted legendary figures like Georg Baselitz and Katharina Grosse, the gallery is now preparing to deepen its European presence with new locations and collaborations.

“We’re entering an incredibly exciting phase,” Dolmacı says. “Our key goal is to sustain the vibrant energy of our geographic base while contributing meaningfully to the global art world.”

In Sevil Dolmacı’s world, art isn’t just for viewing, it’s for building bridges, sparking dialogue, and imagining new futures. With her precise eye and bold vision, she continues to redefine what a gallery can be, not just a space, but a platform. Not just a business, but a cultural force.
