Al Hadheerah in Bab Al Shams: A Desert Iftar Steeped in Arabian Tradition

There are Iftars, and then there is the grandeur of an iftar experience at Al Hadheerah in Bab Al Shams Resort, that transcended the ordinary, unfolding under a blanket of stars in the heart of the desert. A mere 45-minute drive from Downtown Dubai, this secluded desert retreat feels worlds away from the city’s glittering skyline—a journey through sweeping sands that culminated in an evening of Arabian splendour. Amidst the desert palms and the flicker of lantern lights, the essence of Ramadan was not merely observed—it was felt.

A Desert Dream

Tucked within the Bab Al Shams Resort along Al Qudra Road, Al Hadheerah is a masterclass in understated Arabian elegance. From the moment you arrive, the setting transports you. Lanterns cast a soft glow over rustic wooden tables, low cushioned seating invites lingering, and the scent of smouldering oud mingles with the evening breeze. The atmosphere is unhurried, elegant, yet deeply rooted in tradition—a far cry from the usual hotel buffet. What sets Al Hadheerah apart is its commitment to authenticity. Instead of endless chafing dishes, chefs grill meats over open flames, bakers pull fresh bread from clay ovens, and spiced rice dishes steam under the stars. It’s dining as it might have been centuries ago—only with considerably more comfort.

The Food Highlights

The Iftar spread was a carefully curated homage to regional flavours, avoiding the excess of typical Ramadan buffets in favour of quality and craftsmanship. Highlights include:

• Mezze Done Right: Creamy labneh with za’atar, smoky moutabbal with a drizzle of pomegranate molasses, and delicate vine leaves set the tone right for the rest of the meal

• From the Grill: Some of our favourites were the succulent lamb chops with rosemary and flame-grilled prawns

• Hearty Mains: Fragrant mandi rice studded with nuts and the perfect rotisserie chicken stole the show for us

• Sweet Notes: Warm yet crisp kunafa with syrup and the comforting spoonfuls of umm ali sealed the sweet end of our meal

Portions are generous however considered—this was a meal designed to be savoured, not rushed.

The Entertainment

As the evening unfolded, the desert itself becomes a stage. A Tanoura dancer spins in a mesmerising blur of colour, his performance a nod to ancient Sufi traditions. Then, just as the moon rises, Arabian stallions thunder across the sands. A breathtaking spectacle that feels plucked from a bygone era. The performances are polished; each adds another layer to the evening’s narrative without overwhelming it.

The Service

The staff team moved with quiet efficiency, anticipating needs before they’re voiced—a chilled glass of Qamar-Al-Din and Sobia were served just as the thirst struck, and dietary preferences were noted with a discreet nod. It was the kind of service that feels effortless, which of course means it’s anything but.

The Verdict: An Experience to Remember

Was it worth the journey? Absolutely! Between the crackle of the fires, the live music, and the quiet luxury of space, Al Hadheerah crafted an experience that will linger in one’s memory long after the return journey
