Kick off your sandals from the get-go; as soon as you step onto the wooden panels at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, you’ll instantly feel at home. A 45-minute seaplane ride transported us to Alila Kothaifaru, perfectly situated at the northern edge of the Maldives in the Raa Atoll, surrounded by serene waters. If there’s one thing the Alila brand excels at, it’s blending luxury with natural beauty. Spanning 11.2 hectares, from pristine beaches to villas offering panoramic ocean views, this resort promises an unforgettable and private escape.

Guests can delve into vibrant reef and dive sites bustling with pelagic fish, or enjoy snorkelling alongside turtles and majestic manta rays. Embark on a serene sunset cruise for an up-close encounter with playful spinner and bottlenose dolphins. Located near Vaadhoo Island, renowned for its captivating Sea of Stars phenomenon, the resort offers unparalleled opportunities to witness nature’s awe-inspiring displays.

Join me as I recount my journey through its stunning accommodations, delectable dining experiences and the array of facilities that make Alila Kothaifaru a true gem in the Maldives.

The Rooms

I’m not one to complain about being awakened by the sound of waves gently lapping against the stilts of your overwater villa at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives. The overwater villas boast bathtubs overlooking the turquoise water, complemented by pools inset in the deck and stairs leading directly into the sea. Yes, on day two we had to do it for the ‘gram and have our breakfast in the pool, a floating basket filled with a hot and cold selection of breakfast of dreams.

The beach villas, located amidst the lush greenery, provided a tranquil retreat with private terraces leading directly to the white sands. They are the largest accommodations available, featuring separate sitting rooms and private internal courtyards with spacious showers and bathtubs – this was by far  my favourite design in the villa, the stone bath frame with a backdrop of greenery. The perfect place to read a book, and truly escape.

Designed for serene relaxation in harmony with nature, each of the resort’s 44 beachfront villas and 36 overwater villas offers a private pool for your enjoyment. Featuring contemporary interiors in soothing colours and natural textures, these spacious hideaways are positioned to ensure privacy and comfort in understated, sophisticated style.

All villas are generously stocked with Alila amenities, from bath salts to sun cream, lip balms, and aftersun gels, stylish straw beach hats, ensuring a pampered and luxurious stay. Whether you prefer the allure of overwater living or the secluded ambiance of beachside villas, Alila Kothaifaru promises a perfect fusion of luxury and natural splendour. We were lucky to stay in both villas and whilst I would love to confidently choose a favourite they were both honestly stunning, and depends on your choice of view.

Facilities and Activities

It is so tempting to lay under the soft duvets and stare out through the floor to ceiling windows, but we were aware that there was a whole timetable of things to do and discover on the island. Alila Kothaifaru boasts facilities designed to enhance every aspect of your stay, whether trying to live in the moment more and try out some of the yoga and meditation classes, or whether you’re idea of being still is in the infinity pool, overlooking the crystal waters which provides a serene spot to unwind and soak in the breathtaking views. And for those seeking adventure, the resort offers a range of water sports activities, including snorkelling and night snorkelling in vibrant coral reefs and guided excursions to nearby islands. Each activity allows guests to explore the rich marine life and natural beauty of the Maldives, ensuring an immersive experience that complements the resort’s luxurious offerings.

Spa and Wellness

As we ascended the winding dark-wood staircase to Spa Alila, we were warmly greeted by our spa therapists, Jessica and Nogi, both wearing big smiles, who explained the spa procedures and addressed any health concerns. After swiftly slipping into robes and silencing our phones, we indulged in 75-minute signature massages. The Signature Massage Blend, a soothing combination of lavender, lemongrass, and ylang-ylang essential oils, offered the perfect antidote to tiredness and tension, alleviating headaches and stress-related conditions. The aromatherapy oils calmed our minds and stimulated blood circulation, leaving us completely relaxed. Afterward, we felt rejuvenated, enjoying two hours free from mobile phones and scrolling, surrounded by nature while sipping ginger tea and dark chocolate. For those focused on wellness, Sunset Yoga & Meditation, Yin Yoga, and more activities are also available.

Dining Experiences

The resort’s restaurants offer a variety of dining options, from fresh seafood to international favourites, all prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast was served in Seasalt restaurant, where we were spoiled not only with a wide selection to choose from but also with a stunning postcard view: overlooking the main pool, with palm trees gently swaying against the backdrop of the endless horizon.

One of my most memorable experiences was joining Chef Mummu in the outdoor-kitchen for a cooking session focused on traditional Maldivian cuisine. Everything about this activity felt authentic, from Chef Mummu’s extensive knowledge of Maldivian food to wandering through the Alila Spice Garden, surrounding the outdoor kitchen. We prepared a traditional Maldivian dish called Barabo Mas-Huni, bursting with local spices and fresh tuna, including onions, curry leaves, lime, grated coconut, and pumpkin. We had this with freshly made Roshi. This is traditionally made by Maldivian’s for a breakfast or lunch gathering. It was a simple yet incredibly delicious dish. We had to get the recipe from Chef Mummu. This feast not only delighted my palate but also deepened my appreciation for Maldivian culture.

Maldivian sunsets are unmatched, it’s hard to find one like it. So where better than to enjoy a sundowner before dinner? Along the pier at Yakitori Bar. The signature mocktails and cocktails are made with love from the bar team and after dinner head to Umami restaurant for a Japanese dinner.

On our last night, we watched a private movie that I got to choose. I opted for the 1999 classic Notting Hill, which holds sentimental value as it is where I was born and raised in London. As we walked, barefoot through the sand, to our private screening, we were greeted by the Boduberu, a traditional music and dance deeply rooted in Maldivian society, this was led by Salam. Originating from African influence centuries ago, Boduberu blends rhythmic beats and lively movements, symbolising unity and celebration. This essay explores its history, musical elements, famous songs like Magey Loabi, and the intricate craftsmanship behind Boduberu drums.

Time to Leave

As my time at Alila Kothaifaru came to an end, I found myself reluctant to bid farewell to this slice of paradise. The warmth of the staff, the stunning natural surroundings, and the unforgettable experiences made my stay truly exceptional. Alila Kothaifaru is more than just a luxury resort; it’s a sanctuary where you can reconnect with nature, indulge in exquisite cuisine, and create lasting memories. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a solo retreat, this Maldivian gem in the Maldives offers everything you need for an unforgettable escape. I left with a heart full of cherished memories and a longing to return to this idyllic haven, where every moment feels like a dream come true.
