Date nights and intimate parties just found their new home in Hutong, London. Atop London’s largest building, perched on floor 33, diners can expect something magical at the hottest chinese restaurant.
The Venue:
Atop The Shard, Hutong offers an enchanting dining experience that transcends the ordinary. The decor is a tasteful blend of traditional Northern Chinese elements and modern luxury, creating an ambiance that’s both exotic and elegant. The panoramic views of London’s skyline from this altitude are simply mesmerising, adding a unique backdrop to the culinary journey.
The Food Highlights:
Hutong’s menu is a celebration of Northern Chinese cuisine, showcasing an array of flavours and cooking techniques. The signature dish, perfectly cooked Peking Duck is a must have. Prepared with meticulous care, its crispy skin and succulently rich meat is served with thin pancakes and a sweet bean sauce. It is as much theatrical as it is delicious.
Red Lantern is a signature dish that’s travelled the world from Hong Kong to be here. It arrives in a heavy wooden basket, delivered theatrically at the table. Inside, hidden in a sea of angry red Sichuan chillies are multiple golden chunks of deep-fried soft shell crab. This is hot, people – brutally, blisteringly hot. If you accidentally catch a chunk of dried chilli, you’re a goner, but the dish is glorious nonetheless. The golden cases are thin, well-seasoned and fried to perfection. Inside the crabs are hot and gooey, full of flowing, salty goodness and deep, resounding flavour. There are lots of them too, more than I was expecting, hiding under increasingly powerful spice.
The spicy Ma Po Tofu is a bold choice for those who enjoy a fiery kick, offering a perfect blend of Sichuan peppercorns and tender tofu. The dim sum selection is equally impressive, with each piece crafted to perfection, bursting with fresh, vibrant flavours. Each dish is a testament to the chef’s expertise in balancing traditional flavours with modern culinary techniques.
The Service and Hospitality:
The service at Hutong is exceptional, contributing significantly to the overall dining experience. The staff are not only attentive and professional but also passionate about the cuisine they present. Their recommendations and insights into the menu add a personal touch that enriches the meal.
The Verdict:
Hutong in The Shard is more than a restaurant; it’s a culinary landmark in London. The combination of its stunning setting, exquisite and diverse menu offerings, and outstanding service makes it a must-visit destination. Whether it’s for a special occasion or a desire to indulge in high-end Chinese cuisine, Hutong delivers an experience that is both memorable and unparalleled in the city’s dining scene.
