NOURI has captured the hearts of listeners worldwide. Her debut single, Where Do We Go From Here, made waves by securing the top spot in the charts in New Zealand with over 1.1 million YouTube views. The momentum didn’t stop there; the track ascended to diverse regions, stretching from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to Iraq and Palestine. This rapid and widespread success underscores NOURI’s presence on the global music scene, marking a promising chapter in her burgeoning career.

Her narrative becomes even more extraordinary when considering her birthplace—a Syrian refugee camp—where her parents sought refuge during the early Nineties after leaving Kurdistan. The family’s journey led them to New Zealand when Nouri was just three years old, setting the stage for the remarkable story that would unfold.

From a Syrian refugee camp to her meteoric rise on TikTok, NOURI invites us into her world of inspiration, creativity and the exhilarating pathways she’s forging in her upcoming endeavours. We sit back and take in this inspiring story.

We are welcomed with an infectious warm smile, NOURI takes a vibrant skip towards us and a leap into the world of all things NOURI. We kick the interview off talking about her humbling past, we are truly in awe of her story and the strong woman who sits in front of us.

Who is NOURI? Tell us a bit about yourself.

NOURI transports us to her childhood. Her story unfolds, nostalgia and gratitude collide in harmony, painting a portrait of a storyteller whose demeanour sets the stage for an inspiring narrative.

At the tender age of three, NOURI and her family were granted refugee status in New Zealand, marking the beginning of their new chapter. A blossoming talent, she embarked on her musical journey at the age of nine, where her innate gift began to unfurl.

How did you discover your passion for singing and what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

NOURI: “From as early as age four, my world was filled with the sounds and captivating performances of iconic artists like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Whitney Houston. I can vividly recall standing so close to the television, yearning to be on that screen myself. That defining moment ignited a passion within me, a burning desire to practise relentlessly and grace the stage, sharing my music with people from all walks of life”.

In her contemplative moments, she embraces the profound interweaving of her life’s chapters and her role as an artist—the 360-degree revelation, as she fondly dubs it.

The first glimmer of her potential emerged during her primary school years, as she received a resounding standing ovation for her heartfelt rendition of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston’s When You Believe. By the age of ten, NOURI was already gracing local events and competitions with her angelic voice. In 2009, she achieved a remarkable milestone by clinching victory in the Five Minutes of Fame competition held in Albany, located on Auckland’s North Shore. This triumph would pave the way for an extraordinary opportunity – an invitation to perform for the former Prime Minister John Key and other distinguished members of parliament at the illustrious Style Pasifika Fashion Show.

The epiphany that every twist of fate has its purpose crystallised with the release of her debut single, “Where Do We Go From Here?” It was a pivotal moment when she stumbled upon a video of children from the very refugee camp that once cradled her childhood, joyfully singing her song. This poignant discovery illuminated the boundless reach of music, its ability to transcend geographical boundaries, and instil hope in the hearts of those navigating adversity.

How do you describe your signature sound and what influences have shaped it?

NOURI: “My musical journey is a testament to the power of songs—they shape my emotions, leading me into distinct characters as I sing. The melodies become my canvas, painting my life’s moments with a spectrum of emotions. When I’m facing life’s trials, my voice mirrors the depth of my experiences, echoing in soulful tunes. In more upbeat moments of my life I channel the vibrant spirit of Adele and Rihanna, drawing inspiration from their husky vocals to infuse my music with an infectious energy”.

NOURI’s sonic evolution has led her to explore the unlikeliest of unions, the pursuit of liberation from the constraints of genre and the quest for crafting unique auditory adventures have become defining features of NOURI’s artistry.

NOURI places a premium on capturing inspiration in its rawest form, often finding herself ensconced in the cocoon of creativity while driving in her car. In this unconventional setting, thoughts and emotions flow freely, and it is here that she effortlessly forges lyrics and melodies that stir the soul.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far and what lessons have you learned along the way?

In the realm of her music, NOURI finds her wellspring of inspiration in the depths of personal experiences and emotions. Be it her own life’s tapestry or the narratives woven by those in her orbit, she discovers that genuine encounters are the catalysts for her artistic flame.

NOURI: When I sang the United States national anthem for the first time in a Los Angeles arena, it felt surreal. Growing up in a Syrian refugee camp, with the U.S. imposing bans on seven countries, including Syria, the journey to that moment was extraordinary. I received a standing ovation, a testament to the idea that one can achieve anything. I had set foot in LA at 18, dreaming of performing there someday. And there I stood, turning that dream into reality.

Can you give us a glimpse into a typical day in your life when you’re not performing or recording?

NOURI: I’m such a homebody, when I can be, which might come off as boring! Truth be told, my ideal Friday evening involves quality time with my family, indulging in good food and engaging in spirited card games. I’ve got a competitive streak too – the type who might playfully flip the Monopoly board if things don’t go my way, haha! But honestly, those downtown moments with my loved ones are utterly priceless; they’re the ones I cherish the most.

Collaborations are a big part of the music industry. Is there an artist or producer you dream of working with in the future, and why?

NOURI shares her excitement for the future and the projects she has in the works are truly heart-warming.

NOURI: I’ve got this burning desire to collaborate with the incredible Poo Bear, (a producer with an astonishing track record, having sold over 500 million records worldwide and worked alongside luminaries like Justin Bieber, Usher, and Whitney Houston). There’s a unique energy about him that resonates with me, and I’ve already shared my music with him, eagerly awaiting the opportunity. As for dream collaborations, I envision working with a male artist who complements my voice in the music I aim to create. Drake and PartyNextDoor are at the top of my wish list, as they perfectly encapsulate the dream collaborators that align with my artistic vision.

We are convinced that what we are witnessing isn’t a mere dream; we find ourselves wholly immersed in these collaborations, seated beside a resolute and unwavering force. In essence, if determination was a person, it would be her embodiment.

What advice do you have for aspiring musicians looking to make their mark in the music industry, especially those who are interested in cultivating a unique image?

NOURI: First and foremost, there’s no need to rush; finding your path takes time. I’ve learned not to be overwhelmed by the pressure of having everything figured out. Stay committed, work diligently, and maintain unwavering faith—I guarantee that success will find you.

And just like in all areas of life, preparation is key. Always be ready for whatever comes your way.

We’re here for these wise words, NOURI.

How do you connect with them, and what role do they play in your artistic journey?

NOURI: Oh, my fans are my heart and soul! I have an incredible love for social media, especially platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Going live and chatting with my fans is simply amazing—it’s incredibly humbling to know that my music touches them deeply, helping them find their way out of dark moments.

I once was sent a video from a Syrian refugee camp where my music was playing—it was a profound 360-degree moment for me. Unforgettable and truly grounding, this experience added a profound sense of purpose to my journey. While I have my goals, this felt like I had discovered my true calling.

What can we expect from you in the future? Are there any exciting projects or ventures on the horizon that you’d like to share with our readers?

NOURI: I’m often asked about releasing an album, and I’m thrilled to share that I’m currently hard at work on it, aiming to reach a global audience and make my name known worldwide. I have a deep desire to perform across the Middle East and, without a doubt, a show in Kurdistan, my homeland, is a dream come true. Whether it’s a small, intimate gathering of 10 people or a massive audience of 10,000, I approach each performance with the same passion, giving it my all and fully immersing myself in the moment.

NOURI’s music, blending personal stories and cultural influences, has won her a dedicated following. I for one am excited at the prospect of a Middle Eastern tour and fans worldwide eagerly await her album, as promised one is on the horizon. With each release, she connects deeply with her audience, weaving powerful emotions and soulful melodies into her music. Stay tuned.
